The best alarm apps that actually make you get out of bed
If you have installed three alarm apps and still overslept, the reason is usually not the app. It is that every one of them can be switched off from under the duvet. Slide, tap, a bit of mental arithmetic, back to sleep.
So this comparison is built around one question — can you defeat it without leaving the bed? — and a second one that almost nobody asks: what stops you an hour later, when you are awake, upright, and back on Instagram?
Short answer, if you only want the recommendation:
- Most proven: Alarmy — 50M+ downloads, more ways to force you up than anything else.
- Best free and simple: Alarm Clock Xtreme.
- If you get up and then scroll anyway: Beyond Alarm — the only one here that also blocks your apps after the alarm.
The rest of this is the working.

How these were judged
Five criteria, in the order that actually decides whether you get up:
- Can it be beaten from bed? The only question that matters at 6am.
- What it asks of you. A photo of the kitchen and a maths problem are not the same difficulty.
- What happens afterwards. Waking up is half the problem. The other half is the forty minutes you then spend on the phone.
- Android reliability. An alarm a battery optimiser killed is not an alarm.
- Cost, and what the free tier gives you.
Every download count, rating and update date below was read off Google Play on 29 August 2026. Apps change; that date is there so you can tell when this has gone stale.
The comparison
| App | Downloads | Rating | Beatable from bed? | Blocks apps after |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alarmy | 50M+ | 4.6 (2.13M) | No, with photo or barcode | No |
| Alarm Clock Xtreme | 50M+ | 4.5 (1.24M) | Yes | No |
| Sleep as Android | 10M+ | 4.6 (392K) | Yes | No |
| QRAlarm | 50K+ | 4.7 (679) | No, with QR | No |
| Beyond Alarm | 50+ | new | No, with photo or exercise | Yes |
| Your phone's own Clock | preinstalled | — | Yes | No |
That last column is the whole reason this post exists, and I will come back to it.
Alarmy — the one to beat
50 million downloads and 2.13 million ratings at 4.6. Nothing else in this category is close, and it earned that.
Its missions are the broadest set anywhere: photograph a place you registered, scan a barcode, solve maths, memory, type out a quote, shake the phone, or do squats. Wake Up Check is the clever one — if you go back to bed, the mission restarts. That targets the way people actually fail, which is not turning the alarm off but turning it off and then lying back down.
Pick Alarmy if you have already defeated simpler alarms and want the deepest bag of tricks, with the largest number of people having tested it for you.
What it does not do: anything about your phone after you are up. Its listing does not mention blocking apps, and its sleep tracking is aimed at the night before rather than the morning after.
Alarm Clock Xtreme — the sane default
Also 50M+ downloads, 4.5 from 1.24 million ratings. Made by AVG Labs, and it feels like it: unfussy, ad-supported, does the job.
Gradual volume, so you are not detonated awake. An oversized snooze button so you do not fumble dismiss by accident. Decreasing snooze intervals and a maximum snooze count. Maths to dismiss if you want it. Timer, stopwatch, weather.
Pick it if your problem is snoozing four times rather than sleeping through everything. It is the gentlest app here and the easiest to live with.
Its limit is structural, not a flaw: every dismiss method — button, volume keys, shake, maths — works fine lying down. It makes snoozing inconvenient. It does not make you stand up. Worth knowing it was last updated in April 2026, noticeably less active than the others here.
Sleep as Android — the one that is really about sleep
10M+ downloads, 4.6 from 392K, and fifteen years of work in it. CAPTCHA tasks and snooze limits exist, but the alarm is not the point — sleep tracking is. Sonar tracking with no phone in the bed, snoring and sleep-talk detection, breath rate, a sleep score, and integrations with just about every wearable and with Spotify.
Pick it if you want to understand your sleep, not merely survive the morning.
Where it beats us outright, and I should say so plainly: it does sleep tracking properly and Beyond Alarm does not do it at all. If that is what you came for, stop reading and install it.
QRAlarm — the small sharp one
50K+ downloads, but 4.7 stars and updated three days before this was written. It does one thing: you cannot dismiss the alarm without scanning a QR code, which you have stuck somewhere that is not your bedroom. Pro adds chained alarms, a lock on leaving the alarm screen, and a block on uninstalling it.
Pick it if you want a single mechanism, done cleanly, in about 30MB.
It also wins something we lose. 30MB is a fraction of Beyond Alarm's 69MB install, which is that size because on-device pose detection is a large library to carry. If storage is tight on your phone, that difference is real and QRAlarm is the better citizen.

Beyond Alarm
Beyond Alarm does this part for you: the alarm will not switch off until you have actually moved, and the apps you pick stay locked afterwards.

The gap nobody in this list fills
Go back to the last column of that table.
You get up. The alarm has won. And then you pick up the phone. Twenty minutes of Instagram before you have had water. The alarm did its job perfectly and the morning is gone anyway — which is the pattern behind most "I can't get up" problems, and the reason so many people conclude their alarm app "stopped working" when what actually changed was them.
Checking every Play listing on 29 August 2026: none of Alarmy, Alarm Clock Xtreme, Sleep as Android or QRAlarm mentions blocking other apps. The category stops at the moment you stand up.
The usual answer is to run an alarm app and an app blocker side by side, and that mostly works. But they do not know about each other, so the blocker cannot start because the alarm just finished — and that is exactly the ten minutes that decides the morning.
That gap is why Beyond Alarm exists, so read this as the biased section it is. It has the mission alarms — push-ups, squats and jumping jacks counted by on-device pose detection, a photo mission, a household hunt, a step count — and then Morning Lockout holds your chosen apps shut for a set time after the alarm ends, so the phone is not an option while you are still deciding what kind of morning this is. Night Lockout does the same at the other end of the day. The honest disclosure: 50+ downloads against Alarmy's 50 million. It is new, it is a 69MB install, and it does no sleep tracking. If you want the safest choice, it is not us. If you want the alarm and the blocker to be one thing, nothing else on this list is trying.
Before you install anything
Whichever you pick, do these two things or none of it matters:
- Turn off battery optimisation for it, and allow autostart. On Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO and realme this is the single biggest cause of alarms not ringing, and it is set per phone — the full list of settings is here.
- Test the mission once, awake, in daylight. Especially an exercise mission: stand still in front of the camera for a minute and watch whether the count climbs on its own. It often does, and a mission you can beat by standing still is not a mission.
And set tomorrow's alarm before you finish deciding which app is best. The one you have installed beats the one you were still comparing.
Sources
Download counts, ratings, review counts and update dates were read from each app's Google Play listing on 29 August 2026. Feature claims come from the apps' own Play descriptions on the same date rather than from testing each app end to end — where an app has added something since, its listing is the thing to check.
Common questions
What is the best alarm app for heavy sleepers on Android?
Alarmy if you want the most-proven option — 50M+ downloads and years of work behind it. Beyond Alarm if the problem is not just waking up but reaching for the phone afterwards, because it is the only one here that also blocks apps. Alarm Clock Xtreme if you want something free and simple that mainly makes snoozing harder. All three beat the alarm already on your phone.
Which alarm app cannot be turned off from bed?
Any app whose mission needs the camera pointed at something in another room — a photo mission or a barcode scan. Alarmy, QRAlarm and Beyond Alarm all have one. Maths, shaking and typing can all be done under the duvet, so they slow you down rather than move you.
Do any alarm apps block your phone after you wake up?
Only one in this comparison. Checking every Play listing on 29 August 2026, none of Alarmy, Alarm Clock Xtreme, Sleep as Android or QRAlarm mentions blocking other apps. Beyond Alarm's Morning Lockout does, which is the main reason it is on this list at all given how new it is.
Is Alarmy or Alarm Clock Xtreme better?
Alarmy has far more ways to force you up — photo, barcode, squats, typing, memory — and a Wake Up Check that restarts the mission if you go back to bed. Alarm Clock Xtreme is simpler and nags less: gradual volume, maths to dismiss, snooze limits. Both are rated well by over a million people. Pick Alarmy if you routinely defeat alarms, Xtreme if you only snooze too much.
Are free alarm apps good enough?
Usually yes for the alarm itself. What sits behind a paywall in almost every app is the interesting part — unlimited missions, blocking, sleep data, no ads. Every app here has a usable free tier, so install one, use it free for a week, and pay only once you know it works on your phone.
Why do alarm apps fail on Xiaomi, vivo and OPPO phones?
Aggressive battery management on those brands stops background apps, and an alarm that has been stopped cannot ring. It is not the app's bug and no app can fully fix it from the inside — it needs autostart allowed and battery optimisation turned off for that app, set once per phone.
Does an exercise mission actually work?
It works if the counting is honest. Pose detection from a camera is accurate when it can see you clearly and unreliable at the edges, which is where a phone propped on a dark bedroom floor lives. Test any exercise mission by standing still in front of the camera for a minute — if the count climbs, it can be beaten without getting up.
Beyond Alarm
An alarm that keeps ringing until you’ve actually moved — then blocks the apps that pull you back to bed. Free to start, no account.

Seven ways to stop opening Instagram, judged on the only thing that matters — whether you can switch them off when you want to. Verified numbers, what each one really blocks, and which claims are marketing.

Why a rep counter counts push-ups you didn't do
Prop the phone up, stand there, and the count climbs on its own. It is not a bug in the camera — it is what pose detection does when it cannot see a body properly, and it is why an exercise alarm can be beaten by standing still.
