OnePlus alarm not going off? The OxygenOS battery settings that stop it
If your alarm doesn't go off on a OnePlus, the usual reason is that OxygenOS stopped the alarm app in the background. Allow it to run: set battery optimisation to Don't optimise, turn on auto-launch and background activity, check Advanced optimisation, and lock it in Recents — then re-check after every update, because OnePlus can switch it back.
The short version:
- OnePlus is rated the harshest phone maker for killing background apps.
- An alarm app you never open is exactly what it targets.
- There are several separate switches; you need all of them.
- Re-check after every OxygenOS update.
Why OnePlus is the hardest phone for alarms
dontkillmyapp.com, which rates every Android maker on how aggressively it stops background apps, gives OnePlus its worst rating. It names several separate mechanisms, and it notes that OnePlus has been seen to "randomly" revert the battery optimisation setting.
That combination is what makes OnePlus alarms feel unreliable: you fix one switch, it works for a week, an update or the system resets something else, and the alarm quietly stops again.
Every setting, and where it is
Menu names differ a little between OxygenOS versions — the search bar in Settings finds each one.
| # | Setting | What to set | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Battery optimisation | Don't optimise | Settings → Battery → Battery optimisation → the app |
| 2 | Background activity | On | Settings → Apps → App management → the app → Battery usage |
| 3 | Auto-launch | On | Same page: Allow auto launch |
| 4 | Advanced optimisation | Deep / Sleep standby optimisation off | Settings → Battery → Battery optimisation → ⋮ → Advanced optimisation |
| 5 | Lock in Recents | Locked | Recents → long-press the app → Lock |
1. Battery optimisation
The first switch. Open Settings → Battery → Battery optimisation, find your alarm app and set it to Don't optimise. On older versions the same list is under Settings → Apps → Special access → Battery optimisation.
2 and 3. Background activity and auto-launch
On recent OxygenOS, each app's battery page has Allow background activity and Allow auto launch. An alarm app needs both: background activity so it can run overnight, and auto-launch so it can start itself after a restart or after the system has stopped it.

Beyond Alarm
Beyond Alarm does this part for you: the alarm will not switch off until you have actually moved, and the apps you pick stay locked afterwards.

4. Advanced optimisation
On OnePlus 6 and later, the menu (⋮) in Battery optimisation has Advanced optimisation, with Deep optimisation and Sleep standby optimisation. dontkillmyapp calls deep optimisation the "main app killer", and sleep standby optimisation the one that stops notifications arriving while the phone sleeps — which is exactly when an alarm needs to work. Turning them off costs some standby battery; for most people one reliable alarm is worth it.
5. Lock it in Recents
Clearing apps from Recents can stop them outright on OnePlus. Open Recents, long-press your alarm app and choose Lock, so a "clear all" leaves it alone.
The general ones still apply
OnePlus-specific settings aside, the usual causes still apply: the Alarm volume slider, Do Not Disturb letting alarms through, the Alarms & reminders permission, and an overnight restart that leaves the phone locked. The three ways Do Not Disturb silences an alarm are worth checking too.
Beyond Alarm's reliability screen checks battery optimisation and auto-start and opens the right page for each — the OnePlus-only switches above are worth doing by hand. On another brand? See the checklists for Samsung, Google Pixel, Motorola and Xiaomi, vivo, OPPO and realme.
After every update
Make it a habit: when OxygenOS updates, open your alarm app's battery page and check the switches above are still on. It's thirty seconds, and it's the difference between an alarm that works for a week and one that works for good.
Common questions
I already turned off battery optimisation. Why did the alarm fail again?
OnePlus has been reported to revert that setting by itself, notably after updates. Check it again after every OxygenOS update, and also check Advanced optimisation and auto-launch, which are separate switches.
Does swiping the app away from Recents stop the alarm?
It can. On OnePlus, clearing an app from Recents may stop it completely. Lock the alarm app in Recents so a "clear all" leaves it alone.
Does this affect the OnePlus Clock app?
Much less. The built-in Clock is a system app. These settings matter most for third-party alarm apps, which OnePlus treats like any other app.
Do I need to do this for every app?
No — only for apps that must run on time without you opening them, like an alarm or an app blocker.

Moto phones run close to stock Android, but a few settings — Adaptive battery, a hidden Unrestricted option and "Improve battery while inactive" — can stop an alarm app. Where they are and what to set.

Pixels are the least aggressive Android phones at killing apps, so when an alarm fails it's usually Bedtime mode, the alarm volume, a Restricted battery setting or an overnight update. What to check, in order.
